Achadama

Achadama was born in 2013 in a remote village in West Africa. Her family history is much like many in her region. She is the 4th of five children. Her mother works hard to provide for her large family since the death of her father. However, life is a struggle and daily she experiences the burden of being a widow and raising a family in a male dominated culture.

Achadama and her family live near her father’s extended family. Their house is made of mud bricks and often after heavy rains the walls become weak or collapse. There is no electricity or running water in her village. So, Achadama and her siblings must go to the village well to draw water each day. She also gathers firewood because cooking is done over an open fire. She does laundry and during the summer she helps in the family fields where the main crop is corn.

This year (2023-2024) Achadama is in the seventh grade. She feels privileged to go to school knowing many of her friends do not have that opportunity. Her mother works hard to put aside the money to pay her school fees.
