Sheltering Wings sponsors Missionary Amy RIddering who runs our orphanage, school, women's crisis center, and medical clinic in the African nation of Burkina Faso. Amy also manages our Children's Sponsorship program.
Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is located in Africa's savanna zone with a poor, semi-arid soil that supports few crops and produces low yields. Eighty percent of the Burkinabe people live in rural areas as farmers. Burkina has one of the world's lowest life expectancy rates and one of the world's highest mortality rates. There are over 150,000 orphans in this single West African country. The children and widows of Burkina Faso are truly in need of your compassion and prayers.
The Orphanage was dedicated in 2004 and has been in operation since. It is located on community-donated land on the outskirts of the village. The number of children at the orphanage is variable, their ages ranging from infant to near-university age.
Elementary & Secondary Education
Sheltering Wings has been operating a elementary school since 2006. It is located within the courtyard of the Sheltering Wings compound. There are five classes of approximately 30 students each and the school runs
from October until June each year. In 2010 two new classrooms were built. This land was given to Sheltering Wings by the townspeople. In 2012 4 additional classrooms have been built. The future vision is to build primary and secondary classrooms that will educate 1000 or more children each day. Please consider giving to this building project.
Sheltering Wings recently completed building a new medical clinic. This clinic serves the orphans in our care, the sponsored children and eventually the community at large.
Sheltering Wings currently operates a child sponsorship program within the community and it's outlying areas. There are about 400 children currently sponsored. Sponsorship entails for the children school fees and supplies paid for, a daily meal at school or a semi annuall food and goods distribution, an basic medical care. Sponsors give $35 per month which allows us to provide on-going support to the child they have selected.
Clean Water Project
Based on generous donations from friends of Sheltering Wings, plans are being made to drill 3 wells. One well has been drilled on the site of the new school. The second well has been drilled in the village of Kimini where there was no clean water. This well will provide clean water for over 3000 people in the village and surrounding area. The location of the third well is yet to be determined. These wells will provide a clean, sustainable, source of water for thousands of children and their families. Praise God!!
