A decade ago, Janet and I arrived in West Africa on a mission to support Bible translation. We found a home in a very poor section of a large city. It did not take long for us to encounter the overwhelming needs of the people with whom we had come to live. After encountering a neighbor with a gravely malnourished baby boy, we soon found ourselves managing an infant nutrition program. Encountering gaunt mothers with emaciated babies, we began distributing 2-pound packages of rice and beans to supplement meager meals. We soon outgrew our home and found a vacant homestead where we opened the L'Oasis D'Espoir (the Oasis of Hope.) We now feed over 160-babies in our infant nutrition program. We also feed mothers to facilitate their lactation, provide various foods for families, raise chickens for eggs, teach women to sew and help them with machines and materials to run a business, distribute mosquito nets, teach nutrition and literacy, share hope and life through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and much more.
