They are cultivating on the land of the grandfather who is very old and can no longer work. Abdoul Latif’s father grows millet that is their main food source for the year. During the dry season, Abdoul Latif’s father finds part time work with construction projects. The additional income helps buy fresh vegetables to add to their meals and hygiene products. If the family were to become sick, it is likely that they would not have enough left to receive treatment. School is simply a luxury that they can’t afford. Abdoul Latif was given a place at the Sheltering Wings School. He had a hard time adjusting at the beginning, but now he is improving in all of his subjects. Each night he studies with a group. They even have special times when my family can come learn sign language so that they can speak to me, too!! I am so excited.

Asseta lives with her parents. She has six siblings that all live at home and attend school. Her father works in the fields trying to cultivate enough food in the 2 month rainy season to last his family the whole year. He needs to be able to sustain the 14 people that live in his home. Asseta’s mother sells cold water in the village to make a little bit of money that can be used to send some but not all of her children to school. Without her sponsorship, Asseta would not able to afford to attend school. She will also receive a hot meal each day and access to free medical care, should she need it. Most importantly, she will hear the gospel and discipleship from teachers that love the Lord.

Shortly after Fatasse’s birth in 2008, his father died. Fatasse’s father had been ill for a long time and every bit of money went to help with treatment. He and his mother were left with no money, no land and no home in which to live. Usually when a man dies, his family will care for his wife and children. In this case, nobody stepped up to help. Fatasse’s mother took her infant son and found a room to rent. She buys and resells vegetables to earn money for food. The average amount she makes a day is less than a dollar. Things have not been easy and there seemed little hope for Fatasse to go to school. Fatasse was given a place at the Sheltering Wings School. His mother is so very happy that Fatasse has been given this chance. Fatasse is doing very well in his classes. His mother is Muslim, but his grandmother is a Christian. Since starting school, Fatasse has been going to church each week with his grandmother. Sponsorship will ensure that Fatasse can continue his education. Hello, my name is Severine.  I live with my parents and my four brothers and sisters (including my twin brother) in a small home that does not have any running water or electricity.  The closest well is about a kilometer away.  We are a Protestant family.  Neither one of my parents has a regular job, but we work together during the rains to grow enough food that we will be able to eat throughout the whole year.

Each morning, I walk about a kilometer to get to school.  Then I do it again to get home in the afternoon.  A family member will normally walk with me.  When I get home, I like to play marbles or jump ropes with my friends.  When I am all grown up, I want to be a teacher.

Hello, my name is Yasmine.  I come from a Protestant family.  I live with my parents and my two siblings in a small home that does not have any electricity or running water.  The well is a little less than a kilometer away.   Neither one of my parents has a regular job, but we have a small family farm that we work on during the rainy season to try to grow the food that we will eat throughout the year.  

One of my family members normally takes me to school and then picks me up in the afternoon, too.  It’s about a kilometer each way.  Reading is my favorite class! After school, I help my mother around the house.  Sometimes I wash the dishes or help her make dinner.  Then I study my lessons or play marbles with my neighbors.  When I’m all grown up, I want to become a teacher!

Hello, my name is Anasse. I was born on May 14, 2014. I live with my dad, who is a schoolteacher, and his two wives. Both of his wives work in the home to take care of the house and all the children. We do not have either running water or electricity in our home. I have to walk to school because I don’t have a bike. This year (2020-21), I am in first grade. I am learning how to read and how to write. I learn lots of cool songs and how to play new games. There is even playground equipment at the Sheltering Wings school where I attend. School is a lot of fun.

Hello, my name is Abdoul Raouf Tenkodogo. I come from a Muslim family. I was born on October 13, 2013. I live with my parents and three siblings in a large family compound that does not have any running water or electricity. We have a small farm where our family tries to grow the food that we will eat throughout the year. I have a problem with my eyes and have trouble seeing sometimes. I walk about a kilometer to get to school each day. This year (2022-23), I am in the 4th grade. I like school a lot, but Reading is my favorite class. After school, I do my homework, or I play soccer with the kids in my neighborhood. When I’m all grown up, my dream is to become a soldier so that I can protect my people.

Abdoul Fatao Ouedraogo is a bright 11-year-old boy (2025) living with his mother and father in a modest home in West Africa. Though neither of his parents has a regular job, their small farm provides enough food for the family during the rainy season. Life has its challenges: Abdoul’s house doesn’t have running water or electricity, so every day he helps out by fetching water from a well about 50 meters away. Despite these hardships, Abdoul is determined and full of hope, walking 1.5 kilometers to school each day, where he enjoys studying his favorite subject, math.

Abdoul enjoys playing soccer with his friends after school and dreams of becoming a soldier when he grows up. His family is Muslim, and they share strong values of faith and hard work.
