Anne
Anne was born in 2013 and is the eighth of ten children in her family. Her parents are subsistence farmers who live in a small rural village in West Africa. The family grows corn and millet to feed themselves, as well as cotton and sesame as cash crops. Although Anne is still young, she already helps by working in her father’s fields.
Anne attended traditional school only through the third grade. School was very difficult for her, and because her mother needed help at home, her father eventually withdrew her from school.
Anne’s parents now realize that she needs other practical skills in order to support herself in the future. They have agreed for her to attend the Girls Training Center, where she will learn sewing and traditional weaving, as well as gardening techniques and animal husbandry.
Anne is eager to learn these new skills, which will allow her to become more independent and also help support her family.
