Felix
It is difficult to imagine the hardships faced by so many people here. Felix is so young and has experienced more sadness than one should know in a lifetime.
His father died in 2016, shortly after Felix was born. In this culture everything belongs to the father. This includes the children. Often after the death of her husband, a woman is taken as a wife by one of his brothers. Felix’s mother did not agree to this arrangement and she has suffered since her decision. The family of her husband came and took all her belongings right down to cooking utensils and pots. They took her oldest child, a girl. So far they have let her two younger sons remain with her but she fears they may come for them as well.
Felix is the younger son. This year (2025 - 2026) he is in the third grade.
Terrorists have attacked Felix’s village numerous times and recently the whole village was forced to evacuate. Felix, his mother and brother fled some 35 kilometers to the nearest small town and sought refuge in a church there.
After being displaced for 14 months the villagers have been told that they could return to their homes but Felix’s mother has made the decision to leave him in the care of a local pastor. The insecurity in the region and constant threat of another attack causes much stress on the children and affects their ability to concentrate and learn.
Felix is now integrated into the family of our local national partner and he is now enrolled in school.
